Indirect object pronouns

In the previous lesson, we've discussed the word mi and how it is used with a reflexive verb. In this lesson we're expanding on that concept.

Le piace means "to her is pleasing". Or in better English: she enjoys. And because it's the same structure as the formal "you" (Lei), it also means "you enjoy" in the formal sense.

Le is what we call an indirect object pronoun. There are indirect object pronouns for every person, for example:

  • Mi (to me) - also a me
  • Ti (to you) - also a te
  • Le (to her/you) - also a lei
  • Gli (to him/them) - also a lui
  • Ci (to us) - also a noi

You might be wondering: how would one know if the speaker means "to him" or "to them"? Actually, that's all in the context. But if there is no context, you could replace gli with a lui or a loro, to clear things up.
